Punisher MAX miniseries by Garth Ennis!

Finally some news about this miniseries in 2014, what we will know in the clip below is that this miniseries will be a 6 part story called "The Platoon" and it will be placed pre-BORN with a Frank Castle with 0 combat experience since this is, his first tour in '68.

The artist is Goran Parlov.

I'm really looking forward for this Pre-BORN series, i just found it odd why Marvel don't say nothing about this.

PC POST #161: More Ennis Punisher!!! & PREVIEW of Thunderbolts #14

Hi everyone these last weeks were the worst in terms of Punisher stuff since i post in this blog... Thunderbolts #13 being a Red Hulk and Mercy exclusive issue and Superior foes of Spider-Man #2 being an issue with Punisher without the REAL Punisher so i haven't done any review in both issues.

But today things will be HUGE, yesterday a fan of my personal page ( PUNISHER HQ) Kevin Deitz (Thank you, man), said that Ennis did an interview on comiXology mentioned that he will be working in a Punisher mini-series to be released in the beggining of the new year.

I'm really excited for more news about this new upcoming Punisher book with Ennis, i believe that probably it's MAX but he didn't mentioned it, so we will stay alert for more details.

Well personally i don't know how to say it, but i'm not digging this art right now... I have seen some works of mr. Palo but the art of this book is the worst i have seen from him and in this book.

WRITING:

The writing from Jason Starr is fantastic. Carrying on the themes that Aaron and Ennis pushed the Punisher MAX series forward with raw violence, sex and language. Starr brings to life the untold tales of Punisher MAX to life by telling a story titled, “Jimmy’s Collision”. This story is narrated by the protagonist named Jimmy Frisco who finds himself in hot water with the mob. The entire story is told from his point of view and Frank Castle really isn’t in the book much at all. This actually helps the reader to engage more with the other characters and by the time the Punisher shows up…readers are ready.

Rating – “B+”

ARTWORK:

Roland Boschi is at the helm for the artwork in this first installment of the mini-series. He does a serviceable job and really focuses on character interaction nicely. Facial animations and movement are drawn well but the action scenes seem to be missing something. The artwork feels familiar to past Punisher MAX titles, which is a good thing!

Rating – “B”

STORY:

(WARNING – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)

Issue one centers on Jimmy Frisco, a collision shop owner who has found himself one too many times owing money to a mob-boss. Now the mob is after him and he has only so much time to come up with a way to save his own skin. Frisco starts off as a likeable character who is looking for a way out of his situation but he soon becomes a villain after coming up with an elaborate plot to kill off anyone or everyone in his way to freedom. Punisher tracks him down to find out information about the mob and after Frank puts his bullets into every last mobster who is after Frisco, the book ends with Frisco getting blown away by Castle. It really is a cool ending in my opinion.

Rating – “B+“

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE:

The book quickly pulls the reader in. Jason Starr does a nice job at building up characters who we have never met before in the Punisher Universe and he does so very nicely. There is no need for an introduction to Punisher in this mini-series…everyone already knows that this is about one thing and one thing only…Frank Castle blowing people away.

Rating – “B+”

Writing

This is typical Ennis; the blackest of black humour, peppered with swearing yet fantastically well written. Gareth Ennis manages to create characters you genuinely care about despite the horrors they are forced to commit all set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War.

Rating - "A"


Artwork

This is the only comic I've read that's featured Darick Robertson's art, so it's impossible to say whether the man uses a different style for this book than his other books. The art in Punisher: Born is great; there's plenty of detail, especially in the jungle scenes, and each of the different characters of the story have their own individual look, which helps to create feeling for them. The art really helps to sell the story that Garth Ennis is telling and i can't really fault it. The covers by Wieslaw Walkuski look like they're painted, which is a style I'm a big fan of, so extra points go to them.

Story

This is set in 1971, during the Vietnam War, before Frank Castle ever became The Punisher. This is mainly told from the perspective of a character called Stevie Goodwin, who is a soldier in a platoon led by Captain Frank Castle. The story takes place over a five day period during which time Captain Castle dishes out his own form of punishment to members of his own platoon, as well as defending the isolated base from a Vietcong attack, and it's the climatic attack that leaves the reader wondering: what was Frank Castle prepared to sacrifice to ensure his survival?

Rating - "A+"

Entertainment Value

Although Frank Castle isn't the main focus of the story, this is still an essential purchase for Punisher fans as well as comic fans in general. Referenced by Jason Aaron during his PunisherMAX run, this could be as important to the Punishers mythology as Year One was to Batman's. Not only is it a great story, but much like Greg Pak's Red Skull: Incarnate, it also tells the real horror of war, and that is something we shouldn't forget.

Rating - "A+"

TPB Extras

There's the usual cover sketches as well as page layouts and character designs, but there's also a photo gallery featuring photos from Vietnam which suggests that the creators took this project seriously as well as a few paragraphs from Darick Robertson sharing his thoughts about Punisher: Born.

WRITING:

Jason Aaron continues his run on “The Incredible Hulk” by launching the new story arc titled Stay Angry. It appears that the Stay Angry arc will play out somewhat like a Groundhog’s Day type of story in that Hulk goes through a series of events over and over again attempting to stay transformed into the green monster. Aaron’s writing in this issue feels different than the first seven issues of the series. It feels darker and much more like the guest character of the issue…The Punisher. It is no coincidence that Jason Aaron recently wrapped up with acclaimed work on Punisher MAX, telling a grittier and more violent story about Frank Castle.

Frank’s character seems to step into Hulk’s work very well but he disappears just as quickly and silently as he entered it, with very little explanation as to why Punisher was in the story in the first place. I am assuming that this will happen in a similar fashion over the course of the Stay Angry arc.

I personally like this type of story from Aaron. As a monthly reader to his Hulk series, I have felt that it lacked Aaron’s style. This issue definitely brings his style back.

Rating – “B+”

ARTWORK:

Steve Dillon re-teams with Jason Aaron once again to work on this cross-over issue with Punisher. Dillon worked with Aaron on the Punisher Max series and the two collaborated together very well.

Unfortunately for this issue, Dillon’s work doesn’t work out very well. Dillon does a very good job with Punisher and some of the small tertiary characters but he does a horrendous job at drawing super-heroes. It saddens me to think that the first time since of the end of Punisher MAX that Dillon and Aaron have worked together didn’t work out very well. Aaron delivers but Dillon doesn’t.

Rating – “C-“

STORY: (POTENTIAL SPOILERS)

This issue launches a new arc where Hulk wakes up in the middle of Mexico and he has no idea where he is and how he got there. He begins to realize that the only way that he can stop himself from transforming back into Banner is to smash anything he can get his hands on to.

Hulk randomly comes across Frank Castle, who is in Mexico hunting down a gang of men who look like wild dogs. Hulk tells Frank that he wants to come with him on Frank’s mission to be an agent of destruction.

It works out pretty well as the rest of the issue is Frank and Hulk taking out everything in their path until the two of our protagonists meets the leader of the gang. Hulk battles it out with the leader to uncover a puzzling twist about what Banner may be up to. Hulk begins to realize that the Banner inside of him may have more control then he originally thought.

Rating – “A-“

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE:

The issue is highly entertaining. It is intriguing the way that Aaron is setting up the Stay Angry series as to just what the readers may discover with Hulk throughout the Arc. There are pieces of the issue that lack believability but it is fun and it has the Punisher! We get a few great moments of dialogue between the two of them and an interrogation scene where Punisher tortures a Hispanic man J

Rating – “A”

A new Punisher MAX mini-series has been announced and it will be starting this June as a five issues run by Jason Starr! The name of the series will be 'Untold Tales of Punisher MAX'

PC POST #2: Punisher Sales Charts - December 2011

Comic book sales figures are now in for the month of December 2011. Here is the report for how Punisher books performed.

Punisher #7 ended in 81st place with an estimated $23,971 earned.
Punisher MAX #20 ended 123rd with an estimated $17,191 earned.

Let's make a hard effort to get Punisher better totals in January!
